Prologue
A horn. Tires screaming. A thud so heavy it makes the ground shake.
I freeze, my breath catches. “Jameson?” I whisper.
Only Copper barks back, sharp and panicked.
My legs move on their own, carrying me toward the street. The air stinks like burnt rubber.
Copper is there first, barking at the curb. Then I see him.
